Same name, new look, new scent blend ✨ You guys Same name, new look, new scent blend ✨

You guys have been showering me with so much love and support at the markets and I couldn't be anymore thankful!

I keep getting messages about low stock on our website and I just want you to know I am making soap like a crazy woman and selling it just as fast! In the past week we have almost doubled our batch sizes to accommodate demand. My curing rack is about to burst. πŸ˜† Thank you all for your understanding and patience throughout these growing pains! We have so many exciting things on the books for the rest of this year ;)

Self Reliance vs. Community Importance... I'm so Self Reliance vs. Community Importance...

I'm so glad this is a topic in the #backtoprairieliving challenge because it is one of my favorite things to talk about.

We were once "every man for himself" thinkers. This was in the very beginning of our homestead journey and we felt because we were doing very unconventional things everyone was against us. Well we were right and wrong πŸ˜† There's always going to be nay-sayers and Debbie-downers but overall we received so much support and interest in the way we were doing things.

Insert 2020:
People started coming to us for help starting a garden. Some bought chickens and goats to start their own flocks and herds. Others came to the farm to purchase fresh produce and eggs because they have no space to grow their own.

And this is when we realized, we all need each other to be able to learn, grow and evolve. This is how the world is meant to be. All for one, one for all. Those who support us are enabling us to grow our farm to be able to help more members of the community. It's a beautiful cycle and we're so fortunate to be a part of it. πŸ™Œ

*Edited to add:
All this is not say we aren't self reliant, we are! Whatever you do, don't rely on the government πŸ˜† #knowyourfarmer

How do you start preparing for spring? πŸƒ For u How do you start preparing for spring? πŸƒ

For us, spring preparations start in December, when we add fresh compost and mulch to the garden and order our seeds for the next year.

In January and February we continue garden bed prep and clean out the greenhouse, start slow growing things like peppers and tomatoes.

By March and April things are in full swing and we have plants in the ground, the greenhouse bursting and babies bouncing everywhere, it's one of my favorite times of the year!

πŸ“ Do you let your chickens handle the hatching πŸ“ Do you let your chickens handle the hatching process for you? If you do, you end up with some birds that are 100% in tune with your area and how things work on your homestead.

They tend to be better foragers, learning a lot from mama hen at a very young age.
They tend to be hardier and healthier.
In my experience every year the birds just get better!

Not to mention it's SO easy! Mama hen does all the work for you.

Here's how:
Wait for a hen to go broody, then slip your selected eggs under her or let her hatch the eggs she's already brooding.

Wait 21 days.

Bam your flock just evolved 🐣

Tips:
- Every two or three years we order a couple new roosters of breed qualities we'd like to add to our flock.
- one average sized chicken can really only handle about 8 eggs and still keep them at optimal temperature. A bantam size hen can handle about half that.
- sometimes hens will work as a team, this is great as one will take 2-3 day old chicks out while the other hatches the remaining eggs
- the hens are very protective of their chicks, towards other birds and even other baby chicks as well as you and small kiddos, give them space.

Our flock are Farmstead crosses of Production Red, Ameraucana, French Copper Marans, Rhode Island. Red, Barred Rock and Silkie. They are truly a unique bunch and I love the rainbow of eggs we gather each day. And they are so hardy and healthy! Win win.

How do you raise your chicks??

Salt, Fat, Acid & Heat πŸ“– Have you ever heard o Salt, Fat, Acid & Heat πŸ“–
Have you ever heard of this book?

Me either, until today πŸ˜† I don't have the book but here's one of my go-to crock pot recipes when I'm super busy.

Pictured is our homegrown pasture raised chicken legs but this recipe works great with breasts or whole chickens as well!

Here's the recipe ⬇️

- 4lbs chicken
- 2 teaspoons oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 2 Tablespoons butter
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup chicken bone broth
- 6 Tablespoons lemon juice
- 5 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 teaspoons fresh parsley, chopped

Rub chicken with oregano, salt and pepper. Sear. Place in crock pot.

Mix remainng ingredients excluding the parsley. Bring to a simmer in same skillet you seared the chicken. Pour over chicken.

Cook on low for 6 hours or high for 3 hours. 10 minutes before it's done sprinkle with parsley.

Visit my blog to grab the printable! Link in bio.

P.S. my kiddos love this served with rice!

What's your favorite recipe when you've got a packed day?

Horses on the homestead? 🐎 Pros: - great sourc Horses on the homestead? 🐎

Pros:
- great source of green compost material πŸ’©
- wonderful lawn mowers when rotated properly
- brings pleasure and fun to the whole family
- some income streams are possible

Cons:
- consumes MASSIVE amounts of hay in the winter
- hard on pasture if not managed properly
- eats SO MUCH
- extra expenses for farrier work if you don't do it yourself
- literally hungry ALL the time
- extra expenses for training if you don't do that also

Do you see a pattern here?? πŸ’²πŸ’²πŸ’²

Maybe I'm exaggerating a bit about how much it costs to keep(feed) a couple horses. But I can just about guarantee Joel Salatin wouldn't approve πŸ˜‚

I would say our first homestead mistake was not selling the horses when we had the chance- before we moved to the homestead and before the girls got 200% attached πŸ˜…

Stay tuned for ways to make horses earn their keep on the homestead but don't hold your breathe, I've been searching for 6 years πŸ˜†

Do you have horses on your homestead? What pros/cons did I miss??

Ever wonder how in the world we got where we are Ever wonder how in the world we got where we are now? πŸ€”

Hey there. We're Sage and Jessi. Just two highschool sweeties living the homestead dream. But it wasn't always this way.

Yes, we both come from farming and ranching childhoods and homesteading has been in our blood for several generations. So.. how did we ever get into the rat race? And how did we manage to get out?

Well. Sage had a rough adolescence so we got away from that however we could. That looked like town jobs. College. Debt. Living in an HOA(granted it was on a lake πŸ˜‰). We call that two years of our life the therapy and reset we needed.

But we started longing for freedom. Food security. And wide open spaces. This was in 2015. Homesteading wasn't all that poplar in our area. In fact I don't recall ever hearing the word before my mom gifted me a subscription to Mother Earth News magazine.

When I was little my family grew gardens and had a menagerie of rabbits, chickens, goats, horses and cattle. By the time I was 6 they had sold all but the horses and cows and started buying from the store because it was cheaper.

I watched their health decline steadily. Now, 20 years later, I've lost 3 of my aunt's and uncles before the age of 50 and my mother and only remaining uncle are in extremely poor health.

You could say this lit a fire in me. To find true health for me and my own family and to make a real connection to our Creator.

Enter: Homesteading.

We lucked out and found our homestead dream property. 5 acres, south facing slope and all, in 2016. We quit the town jobs, started our own business and worked hard to pay off that college debt. I'm proud to say we own our place and everything on it. πŸ’ͺ

We were blessed with the births of healthy baby girls in 2019 and 2020. 🀍🀍

I started a soap and skincare business incorporating farm goods into every product. 🌼

Then just last year we purchased the 40 acres across the road and have big aspirations for what the future looks like here on our evolving farmstead.

... Bless you for taking the care to read that book!

Now tell me, do we have anything in common??
